Police shot a woman twice in the stomach during a late-night home invasion in South Ozone Park, Queens. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. Friday at a residence on 149th Street, leaving four people injured.
Edward Grant, 39, described the chaotic sequence of events. He stated that he and his girlfriend were sleeping in their attic bedroom when they heard noise from the second floor. Grant said his girlfriend's brother, Rashawn Donovan, 48, had suffered a mental health crisis and attacked the household.
Grant went downstairs and found Koran Davis, 23, his girlfriend's nephew, with a cut to his shoulder. Davis said he was asleep when Donovan entered his room holding two knives. Davis locked himself in the master bedroom, while Grant and his girlfriend retreated to the attic. Grant said his girlfriend pepper sprayed Donovan before he could fully ascend.
Grant claimed he was stabbed in the arm while trying to subdue Donovan. His girlfriend retrieved one of the knives from Donovan. Approximately 30 seconds later, multiple officers entered the attic. Grant said they were ordered to put their hands up and get on the ground. He stated that his girlfriend was in a corner and had to step over him to comply.
Grant said officers shouted that the woman had a knife and fired before she could drop it. He noted that officers tased her while she was on the ground. An NYPD official confirmed the woman was within several feet of officers when a firearm was discharged. The official stated that no physical description of a suspect was provided over the radio prior to the entry.
Authorities confirmed that four people were stabbed during the incident. The victims include Davis, his father, Grant, and Grant's girlfriend. The woman shot by police is currently in stable condition. Donovan has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, assault, and possession of a weapon.
Grant said he threw the keys out the window for officers because Donovan was blocking the doors. He said he could not believe the officers shot the woman who helped them gain entry. Davis agreed, calling the response excessive. He said he understood the speed required by officers but felt the woman was not given time to disarm herself.
