30 percent. That is the increase in Disney+ subscribers across the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region over the last 18 months, a figure cited by Karl Holmes, general manager for Disney+ EMEA, as proof that local content drives growth. He identified this growth as the primary engine behind the new agreement with Channel 4.

The partnership, announced on Sunday, represents the most substantial integration of a European free-to-air broadcaster into a major streaming platform. It follows similar, though less comprehensive, deals Disney has struck with ITV in the U.K., RAI in Italy, ARD and ZDF in Germany, SIC in Portugal, and RTVE and Atresmedia in Spain. Unlike those previous arrangements, this deal moves the entire linear broadcast channel, not just selected titles, into the Disney+ interface.

Channel 4 CEO Priya Dogra described the move as a necessary adaptation to shifting consumer habits. "As audience habits evolve and people go to multiple places to find content, Channel 4 needs to transform to meet those evolving habits," she said. The strategy aligns with the broadcaster's internal "owning our future" initiative, which aims to channel more revenue toward distinctive British content through digital partnerships.

The integration launches in early 2027. U.K. and Irish Disney+ subscribers will gain access to Channel 4's main HD channel and its on-demand library, including scripted and unscripted series. The content will reside in a dedicated, Channel 4-branded section of the app that mirrors the standard Disney+ navigation. New shows will be available "day and date," meaning they will appear on both platforms simultaneously.

Titles confirmed for the initial rollout include the drama "Maya," starring Bella Ramsey, the comedy "Stepping Up" with Denise Welch, and the reality series "Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins." The on-demand catalogue will also feature "Big Mood," "Tip Toe," and "24 Hours in A&E." Financial terms for the agreement were not disclosed.

Data from U.K. measurement firm BARB highlights a demographic gap that the deal seeks to address. Currently, only 3 percent of Channel 4 viewing hours come from audiences aged 4 to 15, compared with 17 percent for Disney+. Among those aged 16 to 34, Channel 4 holds a 10 percent share of viewing hours, while Disney+ captures 39 percent. Holmes stated the goal is to bring Channel 4's "biggest, most talked-about shows" to these younger viewers within a premium environment.

Both executives indicated the partnership could expand further. Dogra noted that Channel 4 already licenses Disney programming, including "The Simpsons" and "This Is Us." Holmes described the current deal as a starting point, stating the companies are "all in" and intend to evolve the relationship into a broader collaboration. Further details on launch timing and additional content are expected to be released later.
