A former guitarist for the Grammy-winning hardcore band Turnstile has been arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder, accused of running over the father of the group's lead singer, Brendan Yates.

Police in Maryland announced the charge against 33-year-old Brady Ebert on Thursday. According to the Montgomery County Department of Police, Ebert hit a 78-year-old neighbor with a vehicle after an argument. The band confirmed that the victim was William Yates.

Mr. Yates underwent surgery and is reported to have come through it successfully. Police said he suffered "serious injuries, including a broken leg."

Prosecutors said the confrontation began when Ebert sounded his horn and shouted obscenities at the victim's daughter and son-in-law while in the driveway of a residential property. Ebert and the elder Yates then exchanged words.

WBAL-TV reported that Ebert allegedly swerved at Yates without hitting him. Yates responded by throwing a rock at the car. Police said the suspect then put his 2001 Buick in reverse, struck the victim and drove away. Authorities later found the car with front-end damage.

Detectives who interviewed Mr. Yates at the hospital learned that the suspect had once been in a band with the victim's son. Ebert was taken into custody on Tuesday.

Ebert co-founded the Maryland band in 2010 alongside Brendan Yates and other members. Turnstile announced in 2022 that it was parting ways with him. The group went on to win two Grammys in February without him.

In a statement sent to the Daily News after the Sunday incident, the band said the split came "in response to a consistent pattern of harmful behavior affecting himself, the band, and the community." Turnstile said it had initially supported Ebert's recovery efforts but cut ties when communication broke down and he began threatening violence. The band alleged those threats escalated in recent months.

"We have no language left for Brady," the band said.
