Kimi Antonelli secured his ninth win of the season at the Circuit of the Americas on Sunday.
The 20-year-old Italian started from pole position and crossed the finish line in 1:35:16.650. Charles Leclerc finished second, 13.078 seconds behind, while Max Verstappen took third place 17.485 seconds back. Antonelli's strategy involved a single pit stop on Lap 25, a move that diverged from the two-stop plans of other teams.
The decision to stay out longer proved decisive over the 56-lap distance. A Virtual Safety Car triggered on Lap 52 when Valtteri Bottas stopped his Cadillac on the track. The caution period lasted until the penultimate lap, a span in which no driver could close the gap to Antonelli.
Russell, Antonelli's teammate at Mercedes, now trails by 123 points with five races remaining. He must win the next event in Mexico City to keep his title hopes alive. If he fails to do so, Antonelli will claim the championship. The Italian has already won five consecutive Grands Prix earlier in the year and has taken both United States races on this year's schedule.
Verstappen, who won every title from 2021 to 2024, is now mathematically eliminated from the 2026 fight. He will finish the season without a fourth consecutive world championship. He cited tyre availability and overall pace as factors in his performance, noting that luck played a role in his podium finish.
Mercedes has also widened its constructors' lead over Ferrari to 133 points. The silver team holds 607 points compared to Ferrari's 474. Team principal Toto Wolff described the result as the best race Antonelli has produced this season. Wolff noted that Antonelli controlled the race despite starting on the inferior tyre compound.
Antonelli said he remains focused on finishing the year strongly. The next race is scheduled for Mexico City, followed by the Las Vegas Grand Prix in November. The title is not yet mathematically secured, but the gap has widened considerably.
Antonelli acknowledged the closeness of the championship but said his mindset remains unchanged. He aims to carry momentum into the 2027 season.
